Timeline of Struggle
CIA-backed Coup
The democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh was overthrown in a coup orchestrated by the CIA and MI6, restoring Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to absolute power. This ended Iran's brief experiment with democracy and planted seeds of anti-Western sentiment.
Islamic Revolution
Mass protests against Shah's authoritarian rule and Western influence led to his exile. Ayatollah Khomeini returned from exile to establish the Islamic Republic, promising freedom but delivering theocracy.
Hostage Crisis & Crackdown
Iranian students seized the U.S. Embassy, holding 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. Meanwhile, the new regime brutally suppressed leftist groups, Kurdish autonomy movements, and secular opposition.
Iran-Iraq War
Saddam Hussein's Iraq invaded Iran, starting an 8-year war that killed over 500,000 Iranians. The regime used the war to consolidate power and silence dissent under the guise of national unity.
Mass Executions
In a few months, the regime executed an estimated 5,000-30,000 political prisoners in what became known as the 1988 massacres. Most victims were members of the MEK and leftist groups.

Dey Protests
Economic protests that began in Mashhad spread to 100+ cities. Unlike 2009, protesters came from working-class areas and chanted against the entire regime. At least 25 killed, thousands arrested.
Bloody November
Fuel price hikes sparked nationwide protests. The regime cut internet for a week and unleashed the most violent crackdown in the Islamic Republic's history. Reuters reported 1,500+ killed.
Woman, Life, Freedom
The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in morality police custody sparked Iran's most significant uprising since 1979. Women led protests, burning headscarves. Over 500 killed, 20,000+ arrested.
Economic Collapse
The rial collapsed from 700,000 to 1,400,000 per USD in 6 months. Inflation hit 50%+. Regime corruption, mismanagement, and sanctions devastated ordinary Iranians while elites thrived.
